Three Suspects Arrested For Allegedly Hijacking A Vehicle

Three suspects have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a vehicle hijacking incident.

This was revealed in a recent statement released by the South African Police Service and the statement reads;

Gqeberha: Excellent collaboration between SAPS Kabega Park and the Anti-Gang Unit members resulted in the arrest of three suspects allegedly involved in a vehicle hijacking which took place on Wednesday, 12 May 2021.

It is alleged that at about 11:00 on the mentioned date, the complainant (age unknown) and the driver of an Iveco panel van were driving on the N2 freeway just passed the Baywest turnoff when they noticed a white VW Polo alongside them. The passenger pointed a firearm at them and ordered them to pull off at the side of the road. Two males took the female to the VW Polo while the other two jumped into the Iveco truck and drove off.

By this time, details of the alleged hijacking were simulcast over police radio channels and all vehicles were on the lookout for both vehicles. At about 14:40, SAPS Kabega Park members spotted the VW Polo in the Greenbushes area and when the suspects saw the police, they sped off onto a gravel road. One suspect threw out the 9mm pistol. The driver suddenly stopped and the passenger jumped out and ran away. The driver, approximately 38-year-old was arrested and detained on a charge of vehicle hijacking. The 9mm pistol was recovered (serial number filed off).

Simultaneously, at about 14:20 the Anti-Gang Unit members were patrolling in the Bloemendal area when they blocked off the entrance in Mission Road on the Bloemendal side. The Iveco bakkie was spotted in Mission Road with the suspects and the driver. AGU pursued after the vehicle and the driver lost control and collided into a boundary wall. Both suspects got off and ran but were immediately arrested. The suspects, aged 29 and 32-years-old were detained on a charge of possession of suspected hijacked vehicle.

All the suspects will appear in the Gqeberha Magistrates’ Court on Monday; 17 May 2021.
