Early life and career
South East London is where Van der Put spent his childhood. After watching the magician Jerry Sadowitz perform on the show Stuff the White Rabbit on BBC2, the young man was motivated to pursue a career in the field of magic. He joined The Magic Circle when he was 18 years old and was one of the younger members to ever give a lecture there, making him one of the youngest members ever to do so.

Because of the pressure from his family, he decided to get a degree in computer science and launch a second career in the information technology field. After two years, a case of acute pancreatitis forced him to reevaluate his life ambitions, and he quit IT to pursue performance tactics as a theater student at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

He co-founded the theatrical cabaret company standnotamazed along with fellow graduates of the CSSD Alexis Terry, Maya Politaki, and Lucy Cullingford, and he currently serves as the company’s artistic director. And then I’d make a remark to them that I thought was amusing, and maybe one or two other people might think it was funny, but the vast majority of people would just get upset by it. Therefore, the dragon suit unquestionably played a role in making me more acceptable in social settings.

Van der Put stated this about the people who had an influence on his humorous style: “It was the people who are a little more irreverent.” It was folks like The Wonderful Johnathan, Penn and Teller, and Harry Anderson…and also, if you look at some of the Copperfield stuff, like with the singing tie, he has a lot of amazing comedic routines as well. However, it is quite clear that the other things that Copperfield performs are of a very sober and solemn kind. And it was what prompted my response in the first place.

And when asked which is more difficult, doing magic tricks or being funny, van der Put responded, “Without a doubt, it is making the magic tricks work.” This is the most difficult part. Because when it comes to humor, it doesn’t take long to rewrite a joke, but when it comes to making a magic trick work, it usually takes at least a month or two of research and development prototyping. And if that doesn’t work, you’ll need to actually return to the drawing board and rethink everything. Because at this point you have wasted so much time on something that no one even cares about. Therefore, you will need to begin over.
