Hazel McCallion Husband: Meet Sam McCallion: Hazel McCallion was a Canadian businesswoman and politician born on February 14, 1921, to Herbert Armand Journeaux and Amanda Maude Travers.
She attended Quebec High School and after graduating, she furthered her education at the Business Secretarial School in Quebec City and Montreal but was not able to attend university because her family could not afford it.
McCallion began her political career in Streetsville but lost her first political race. Her first campaign was in 1964 for the position of deputy reeve. Later she was appointed the chairman of the Streetsville Planning Board.
After the 1967 election, she was elected again as deputy reeve, and in the subsequent year (1968), she was appointed reeve. In 1970, McCallion was elected as Streetsville’s mayor serving until 1973.
During the 1976 election, McCallion won her seat on the Mississauga council by acclamation and also served on the executive of many federal and provincial committees and associations.
McCallion had sat on virtually every committee in Peel Region and the City of Mississauga before she was elected mayor of Mississauga. She was first elected mayor in November 1978 and ruled Mississauga for 12 terms and into her 94th year.
McCallion served as the fifth mayor of Mississauga from 1978 until 2014 and is the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history, having served for 36 years at the time of her retirement in 2014.
In 2016, February 14 was renamed Hazel McCallion Day across Ontario in honor of her birthday. Hazel McCallion died from pancreatic cancer at her home on Sunday, January 29, 2023, at the age of 101

Hazel McCallion was married to Sam McCallion. The pair met at an Anglican Church congregation in Toronto in 1951 and got married on September 29 of that year (1951).
