The unification of Upper and Lower Egypt was achieved around 3150 BC by King Menes, who founded the first dynasty. The Old Kingdom period (2686-2181 BC) saw the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

In 332 BC, Alexander the Great conquered Egypt as he toppled the Achaemenids and established the short-lived Macedonian Empire, which gave rise to the Hellenistic Ptolemaic Kingdom, founded in 305 BC by one of Alexander’s former generals, Ptolemy I Soter.

Egypt was later conquered by the Romans in 30 BCE and became a province of their empire. In 641 CE, Egypt was conquered by Arab Muslims and became a part of the Islamic Caliphate.

Egypt gained independence from British rule in 1922 and became a monarchy. Following a revolution in 1952, Egypt declared itself a republic, and in 1958 it merged with Syria to form the United Arab Republic, which dissolved in 1961.
