Benazir Bhutto was a Pakistani politician who became the first woman leader of a Muslim nation in modern history. She served two terms as prime minister of Pakistan, in 1988–90 and 1993–96. She was born on June 21, 1953, in Karachi, SE Pakistan. Her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto founded the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and was prime minister from 1971 until he was overthrown by General Zia-ul-Haq in a military coup in 1977. Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on December 27, 2007.
