Yara Sayeh Shahidi is the daughter of Keri Salter Shahidi and Afshin Shahidi, who is a photographer. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her mother, Keri Salter, is from African-American and Choctaw ancestry, while her father, Afshin, comes from Iranian ancestry.
