Kinison died in an accident. Kinison was driving his Pontiac Trans Am when it was hit head-on by a pickup truck driven by 17-year-old Troy Pierson on U.S. Route 95, California, on April 10, 1992. Pierson had been drinking alcohol before the collision.

While attempting to pass another car, the pickup truck crossed the centre line of the road and proceeded into Kinison’s lane. Kinison and his wife were on their way to the Riverside Casino in Laughlin, Nevada, to play at a sold-out show.

At the scene of the accident, Kinison was discovered unconscious between the seats of his car. He wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time. According to his brother, his head hit the windshield and he was pronounced dead at the site. He was 38 years old at the time.

His wife was also hurt in the accident, but she was able to recover after being transferred to a hospital in Needles for treatment. Kinison suffered severe catastrophic injuries, including a cervical spine dislocation, a damaged aorta, and torn blood vessels in his abdominal cavity, which resulted in his death within minutes of the collision, according to an autopsy.
