Gato Alves Dias (born 14 May 1997) is a Portuguese professional footballer who now represents Manchester City in the Premier League and the Portugal national team. Dias is noted for his power, leadership, passing, and aerial skill, and is regarded as one of the best defenders in the world.

Dias was a product of Benfica’s youth system. In 2015, he joined Benfica B and was promoted to the senior squad in 2017, earning him the title of Young Player of the Year in the Primeira Liga. Dias’ performances the next season helped Benfica win the league title in 2018–19 and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira in 2019–20, as well as being chosen to the Primeira Liga’s Team of the Year, despite making over 100 appearances.

On September 29, 2020, Dias signed a six-year contract with Manchester City in the English Premier League, for a reported fee of €68 million (£61.64 million), with Benfica receiving an initial fee of €56.6 million (£51 million), plus Nicolás Otamendi being sent to Benfica in part-exchange for €15 million, which could rise to €71.6 million, including performance-related bonuses. Dias made his league debut for City on October 3, 2020, in a 1–1 away draw against Leeds United.

Following a string of outstanding defensive performances, Dias was named Manchester City Player of the Month for November 2020. Dias scored his first goal for City in a 2–1 home league win over West Ham United on February 27, 2021. By restoring composure, leadership, and consistency to the defense, he was credited with helping Manchester City reclaim the Premier League title that season.

Dias won the FWA Footballer of the Year award for the 2020–21 season, beating out Harry Kane and Kevin De Bruyne, and being the first defender to do so since Steve Nicol in 1988–89. He was also named Player of the Season for Manchester City and Premier League Player of the Season.

Dias led Manchester City for the first time on September 15, 2021, assisting Jack Grealish in a 6–3 home Champions League win over RB Leipzig. Dias scored the first goal in Manchester City’s 2–1 win over Aston Villa on December 1st, his first goal from beyond the box in his career.
