P.M. Dawn’s Prince Be, born Attrell Cordes, is best known for the 1991 hit “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss.”

Attrell Cordes, better known as P.M. Dawn founding member Prince Be, is dead at 46.

Family members said he died Friday in a New Jersey hospital after a battle with renal kidney disease. A representative for the hip-hop group confirmed his death to People magazine.

“Prince Be Rest In Peace forever more, Pain from Diabetes can’t harm you anymore,” Cordes’ cousin and P.M. Dawn member Doc G wrote on Facebook. “My Heart is at Peace B-Cuz U suffered so long, Tell Grandma I said Hi & Stay Blisstatic & Strong.”

P.M. Dawn also hit No. 3 with “I’d Die Without You” from the soundtrack for “Boomerang,” starring Eddie Murphy, in 1992. “Looking Through Patient Eyes” was another Top 10 hit.

According to Rolling Stone, Prince Be struggled with health problems related to diabetes years later. He suffered a stroke in 2005 that paralyzed the left side of his body, and one of his legs was amputated below the kneecap.

Still, his music influenced a generation of artists. Public Enemy’s Chuck D, MC Hammer, Lenny Kravitz, Outkast’s Big Boi, Chris Rock and Wayne Brady shared their condolences on social media.

“Prince B. R.I.P. Such a weird year. I’m not gonna be crazy and compare him to prince or Bowie. But the guy made some pretty good music. ‘I’d die without you’ is a great song,” Rock wrote.

EW reports he is survived by his wife Mary and three children: Christian, Mia, and Brandon.

“The love is felt & appreciated. My husband was amazing &Incredibly loving father. He deserved more He loved you all,” Mary wrote.
