Lions Club Trains 50 Pupils In Use Of Computer

NGChuks Lion’s club, a subsidiary of Lions Club, Anthony Village has launched month-long computer training for 50 less-privileged secondary school pupils in Anthony Village and environs, Lagos.

According to its president, James Uwuseba, the idea is to equip 10,000 pupils with basic computer knowledge in the next few years, starting with this flagship edition. He said the programme was informed by his IT background and the need to impact on young people in the community.

First Vice President, Obi Ummunakwe, said the programme is in fulfillment of the club’s August schedule, which usually focuses on youth empowerment.

Lioness Ekene Ajiri Uwuseba, who described herself as ‘the tale-twister’ said, “We noticed that there has been a downward trend when it comes to JAMB scores because it is now CBT; and because most of these children don’t even have access to the computer, you find that they don’t even know what to click on, and that has contributed to the mass failure the country has been recording in that exam.”

Service Committee chairman Joseph Alade, said the club has been encouraged by the response of the pupils.

Some of the pupils also expressed their gratitude to the club for the opportunity and the impact it is having on them. Joshua Victoria, 15, who attends Anthony Village Senior High School, said the programme has opened her eyes to several aspects of the computer she never had any idea of.

In the same vein, Daodu Muinat, 14, of Immaculate Hearts Comprehensive Senior High School, Mende, said before now, her knowledge of the computer was limited to playing games, but now, she can control the mouse and knows more shot-cuts.

Aliyu Zainab, 13, of Aladura Comprehensive High School, said she is grateful for the opportunity of the programme, as she can now launch apps, type and send messages; while her classmate, Adinna Kingsley, 13 said she now hopes to be a computer system operator when he grows up.
