Sam Mendes is a British director and producer. He is well known for his dark reimaginings of the theatrical musicals Cabaret (1993), Oliver! (1994), Company (1995), and Gypsy (1995) in the theatre (2003).

Mendes earned a CBE in 2000 for his contributions to drama, and he was knighted in the 2020 New Year’s Honours List.

In the same year, the Alfred Toepfer Foundation in Hamburg, Germany, awarded him the Shakespeare Prize. The Directors Guild of Great Britain honoured him with a lifetime achievement award in 2005.

He was placed number 15 on The Daily Telegraph’s list of the “100 most powerful people in British culture” in 2008.

Alfred Hubert Mendes MM was a novelist and short-story writer from Trinidad and Tobago. Mendes is most known for his short stories from the 1920s and 1930s, as well as two novels, Pitch Lake (1934) and Black Fauns (1935).
