Elfman had substantial hearing impairment during his 18-year tenure with Oingo Boingo as a result of the constant exposure to the high noise levels involved in performing in a rock band. Fearing further deterioration of his illness, he opted to leave the band, declaring that he would never return to that level of performance again.

Danny’s hearing loss was so severe that he couldn’t “even sit in a loud restaurant or bar anymore.” However, he realised that performing in front of orchestras was more bearable, and he returned multiple times to reprise his live portrayal of Jack Skellington.

Daniel Robert Elfman is a composer, vocalist, and songwriter from the United States. In the early 1980s, he rose to prominence as the singer-songwriter for the new wave band Oingo Boingo. Elfman has received international acclaim for over 100 feature film scores, as well as compositions for television, theatrical plays, and the concert hall, since the 1990s.

Elfman has frequently collaborated with directors Tim Burton, Sam Raimi, and Gus Van Sant, with notable accomplishments including the scores of 16 Burton-directed films, including Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, and Dumbo; Raimi’s Darkman (1990), A Simple Plan (1998), Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Oz the Great and Powerful, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
