The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Kwara State Command has detained five suspected fake NSCDC officers who are accused of extorting money from petrol merchants.

The suspects were traveling around petrol stations in the Ilorin city, pretending to be Civil Defence officers on national assignment from Abuja, according to Babawale Afolabi, the state public relations officer for the NSCDC.

According to Afolabi, investigations have begun to determine whether the accused are establishing a cartel with other associates in the state’s 16 local government areas.

“On the 8th of March, 2022 at about 1422 hours, our anti-vandal unit led by ACC Yusuf got an intelligence report that some groups of men, who put on uniforms of Civil Defence have been going around filling stations in Ilorin metropolis claiming to be members of national task force on assignment from Abuja. After meeting the managers of the petrol stations, they will collect money from them, because the petrol sellers believe that they were officers of the NSCDC,” he stated.

“During interrogation, the suspects admitted to be doing illegal duties, though maintained to be members of the Importers Association of Nigeria and were going about filling stations to gather intelligence reports.” he added.

The suspects, identified as Saheed Adedayo, 37, Muritala Oloruntoyin, 40, Emmanuel Ferife, 45, Abiodun Oluseun, 44, and Isaac Aluko, 43, all pretended to be representatives of the Nigerian Importers Association and have been collecting money from unsuspecting petrol merchants, according to the spokesperson.

Unfortunately, they weren’t lucky this time around. When they approached a filling station in Ilorin’s Amilegbe neighborhood, the petrol station’s management phoned the anti-vandal unit’s office. The five suspects were apprehended after the unit patrol team went into action operation.

“During interrogation, the suspects admitted to be doing illegal duties, though maintained to be members of the Importers Association of Nigeria and were going about filling stations to gather intelligence reports.” he added.

Meanwhile, Makinde Ayinla, the state commander of the NSCDC, has warned petrol outlets and members of the public to be aware of unscrupulous people who may want to exploit the current fuel scarcity scenario to carry out illegal acts.

Before dealing with any group or individual claiming to be security operations, he recommended people do their homework.
