Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that Ghanaians traveling outside the country by air should use their passports rather than the Ghana card for the time being.

The vice president is quoted as saying in a report monitored by PressInformant on starrfm.com.gh that the process of having the Ghana Card recognized as an e-passport is still ongoing.

This was highlighted in a recent piece in PAV Magazine’s February issue, in which Dr Bawumia praised the Akufo-Addo administration and discussed the impact of digitalization.

According to reports, Dr. Bawumia said;

“…Ghana will be one of only a handful of countries where a national identification card also constitutes an e-passport, an illustration of the opportunities of digitisation. I will of course update citizens on developments concerning the activation of the e-passport feature, but discussions are positive.

For the time being, I urge travelers to, as always, bring their passport and other forms of the required documentation with them. Additionally, citizens should continue to apply for their own Ghana Card so that they can be part of this digital revolution,”

Dr Bawumia announced in November 2021 that the Ghana Card’s e-passport feature would be worldwide recognized by over 195 nations by the end of the first quarter of 2022, subject to ICAO approval.

In this regard, Ghana will become one of just a few countries where a national identity card may also serve as an e-passport, demonstrating the benefits of digitization.

The vice president went on to say that he would keep residents up to date on developments regarding the e-passport feature’s activation, but that all discussions were favourable.
