Sapp started singing in church when he was just four years old, and he was born and reared in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He participated in a variety of Gospel singing groups and ensembles throughout the course of his teenage years. He attended the Indianapolis, Indiana campus of the unaccredited Aenon Bible College during his time there. [1] After receiving an invitation from gospel artist Fred Hammond to sing with Commissioned in 1990, he decided to leave Aenon. Keith Staten had left the band earlier that year. Sapp has contributed to the musical projects Number 7, Matters of the Heart, and Irreplaceable Love, all of which were released by the band. Marcus R. Cole was hired to succeed Sapp after he resigned in 1996.

Solo career
Sapp made the decision to launch his career as a contemporary gospel solo artist in 1996, and since then he has published seven albums. In 2007, with the release of “Never Would Have Made It,” the lead single from Sapp’s album Thirsty, he earned his first taste of crossover fame. The song reached its highest position on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list at number 14, on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 82, and on the Billboard Hot Gospel Songs chart at number 1. The first week of sales for Thirsty saw it debut at position No. 28 on the Billboard 200 chart, No. 4 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and also No. 1 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart.
