Bahrain is now a constitutional monarchy ruled by the Khalifah family, which has been in power since.

Bahrain has a long history that dates back at least 5,000 years, at which time the region served as a trading center between Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley.

It was the seat of ancient Dilmun civilization, a prosperous trading centre linking Sumer with the Indus valley about 2000 BCE.

Bahrain was ruled by various powers, such as the Persians, Sumerians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Portuguese, Arabs, and British.

Bahrain was forced to declare independence on 15 August 1971 after a failed attempt to create a union of Arab emirates. The first constitution of the now independent State of Bahrain was promulgated in 1973.

Bahrain developed the first post-oil economy in the Persian Gulf and is recognised by the World Bank as a high-income economy.
