Azonto Died Because The Originators Were Not Trained – Gyedu Blay Ambolley

Veteran highlife singer Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has stated that the originators of the popular dance ‘Azonto’ could not be sustained because the originators were not trained artists.

The ace musician Gyedu Blay Ambolley stated that the music genre Azonto was very nice and popular and could be sustained and exported well if the originators of the genre were trained enough.

“The people who came up with Azonto were not trained musicians so it became really shallow instead of being really full. If you see how the white people were dancing t Azonto, you can tell it was a really good export so why couldn’t we keep exporting it? Because there was a problem”, he told the host in an interview on the Weekend Rush on Y107.9FM.

Using the highlife genre as an example, Ambolley said that because the highlife musicians are trained, the genre has been able to stand the test of time, hence Ghanaians need to focus more on uplifting the genre and exporting it more as it is “a music of unification”.

We need to start thinking together to see how we can export our music because Ghana’s music is enjoyed everywhere and even by children. Highlife is a type of music that brings everybody to the floor so we need to think about how w can export that”, he added.
