Ava DuVernay was born on 24 August 1972 in Long Beach, California. Her parents were Darlene Sexton and Joseph Marcel DuVerney III. Her mother worked as an educator. Her father originated from Louisiana, but she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Murray Maye, together with her four siblings. She used to travel to her father’s home near Selma, Alabama. Her visits here influenced her to make her film, Selma because her father experienced The Selma to Montgomery marches of 1965.

Simpson’s murder trial, she decided to try out public relations. She even worked for Fox, and Savoy Pictures in the 20th century as a junior publicist.
Then, she opened her own public relations firm in 1999 called DuVernay Agency or just DVAPR. She used to provide PR services and also worked on campaigns for television and film shows, including Lumumba, The Terminal, Dreamgirls, and many more. She launched several other ventures, including Urban Beauty Collective.
She made her first film during the Christmas holiday of 2005 using $6 000 called Saturday Night Life. She then thought of making documentaries as they could take a smaller budget directing the first one in 2007, “Compton in C Minor.” She made her first narrative film in 2011 called “I Will Follow,” starring Sallie Richardson-Whitfield. She produced her second narrative film, “Middle of Nowhere,” in the summer of 2011. She was then commissioned to create a film about African-American history by the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
She directed a $20 million budget film, Selma, which was produced by Plan B Entertainment and was released on 25 December 2014. She directed the documentary film, “13th,” which was announced by the New York Film Festival in July 2016.
She was reported to be the new director of the 1962 novel film, “A Wrinkle in Time,” on 8 February 2016. The film started filming in November 2016. She has directed three television documentaries, one being a two-hour film on TV One, “Night Only: Live from the Essence Music Festival.” She also directed the first BET music documentary, “My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women and Hip Hop.”
