Aung San Suu Kyi is a Burmese politician and opposition leader who was born on June 19, 1945 in Rangoon. She is the daughter of Aung San, a martyred national hero of independent Burma and Khin Kyi, a prominent Burmese diplomat. She is also a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

During the military control of Myanmar, she was a noted prisoner of conscience and advocate of nonviolent resistance. For many years (1989-2010) she was held under house arrest. She brought some democracy to her country with nonviolence and became the State Counsellor of Myanmar.

Aung San Suu Kyi won the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights. She has received numerous honours and awards throughout her life for her peace and freedom activism in her homeland of Myanmar.

In 2015, she led her National League for Democracy (NLD) to victory in Myanmar’s first openly contested election in 25 years.
