On Jan. 1, People awoke with some new protections from big medical payments.

Meet the No Surprises Act. It’s a brand new legislation that protects sufferers from one of many worst experiences the U.S. well being care system has to supply — shock out-of-network hospital payments. That’s when an individual will get hit with a invoice from an out-of-network supplier at an in-network hospital. Underneath the brand new legislation, if an individual visits an in-network hospital and is seen by an out-of-network supplier, that supplier and the insurer must work it out for themselves. Sufferers are solely on the hook for what they might’ve paid an in-network supplier. That’s a giant deal.

However there are some caveats (as a result of, after all). As an example: These protections apply solely to care in a hospital. Then there’s the deceptively named Shock Billing Safety kind that sufferers may be requested to signal, waiving these newly gained rights. And there’s extra.

This episode of “An Arm and a Leg” breaks down what it is advisable to learn about your rights below this new legislation, what traps to look out for, and who to name if one thing smells fishy.

Truly, right here: The federal hotline for reporting No Surprises Act violations is at 1-800-985-3059.
