Neil Armstrong was an American astronaut and aeronautical engineer who became the first person to walk on the Moon in 1969. He was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio on August 5, 1930. Armstrong began his NASA career in Ohio after serving as a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952.

Armstrong was the eldest of three children born to Viola Louise Engel and Stephen Koenig Armstrong, a state auditor. He entered Purdue University, studying aeronautical engineering, with the U.S. Navy paying his tuition under the Holloway Plan. After graduating in 1955, Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) which later became NASA.
