Early life of Yvan Colonna

 

Colonna was born in Ajaccio, France, on 7 April 1960. He was the son of Jean-Hugues Colonna, a former member of the National Assembly for the Socialist Party elected in the Alpes-Maritimes and a recipient of the French Légion d’honneur. His mother was from Laz in Brittany.

In 1975, his family moved to Nice. After completing his Baccalauréat (French high school), he studied to become a teacher of physical education and sports, but broke off his studies in 1981. He then went to Corsica and moved to Cargèse, where his brother later opened a beach bar.

He later took up goat herding, a traditional occupation in Corsica, and joined a nationalist militant faction close to the National Liberation Front of Corsica. He was suspected in several terrorist acts in the region, and notably to have taken part in an attack on the Pietrosella police station.

 

How Did Yvan Colonna Died?

 

On 2 March 2022, Colonna was attacked in prison by Franck Elong Abé, an Islamist 36-year-old Cameroonian inmate, reportedly for “disrespecting prophet Muhammad”.

In response, violent unrest broke out across Corsica.  After spending three weeks in a coma at a hospital, he died of his wounds on 21 March 2022, at the age of 61.

 




 

 

 

Who was Yvan Colonna?

As per the sources, Yvan Colonna was injured brutally on Wednesday by a fellow prisoner. After the fight, Yvan Colonna was immediately taken to the Arles hospital but later, he was shifted from there to another hospital in Marseille. One of his lawyers, Me Emmanuel Mercinier Pantalacci reported, “I inform that Yvan Colonna is in a post-anoxic coma.”

According to a close source to the case, the Corsican independence activist is in a state of brain death. His advocate speaks of a post-anoxic coma that is caused by oxygen deprivation in the brain.
