J.K. Rowling is a British author and philanthropist who is best known for writing the Harry Potter series. She was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, near Bristol, England. After graduating from the University of Exeter in 1986, Rowling began working for Amnesty International. She later moved to Portugal where she taught English as a foreign language. It was during this time that she began writing Harry Potter.

The Harry Potter series has become one of the most successful book series of all time. It has been translated into over 80 languages and has sold over 500 million copies worldwide. Rowling has also written other books such as The Casual Vacancy and The Cuckoo’s Calling.
