Sophie Lancaster Mum

Sophie Lancaster’s mother, a campaigner, died unexpectedly just one month after speaking out against the release from prison of one of her daughter’s attackers.

Sophie, 20, and her boyfriend Robert Maltby, 20, were attacked in a park in Bacup, Lancashire, in August 2007 after being targeted because they were dressed as goths. Sophie died from her injuries after being savagely assaulted while she cradled Robert’s head in her lap in 2007.

Herbert was 16 when he was sentenced to prison in April 2008 for murdering Sophie and assaulting Robert with the intent to cause severe bodily harm. He was sentenced to a minimum of 16 years and three months in prison, which was eventually reduced to 15 and a half years after an appeal.

Dr Sylvia Lancaster, her mother, spent the next 15 years advocating for persons from alternative subcultures and developing educational programmes to combat discrimination.

She died a sudden and unexpected death on Friday, April 2022 at Royal Blackburn Hospital, after suffering from illness for several years.

The Sophie Lancaster Foundation paid tribute to her as a “strong life force” who fought for what she believed in.”
