Renato Junior Luz Sanches is a Portuguese professional footballer. Sanches, who was born in Amadora on August 18, 1997, is a midfielder. He is now a member of Bayern Munich in Germany. Sanches began his professional career at Benfica, where he made his reserve team debut in October 2014 and his first-team debut in October 2015. He helped Benfica win the Primeira Liga and Taça da Liga double in his first and only season with them, earning him the titles of Primeira Liga Breakthrough Player and Golden Boy in the process.

Sanches’ achievements drew the attention of Bayern Munich, who purchased him for an initial sum of €35 million in July 2016, the biggest fee ever paid for a Portuguese player in the Primeira Liga at the time. During his first season at the club, his performances dipped, and he was loaned to Premier League side Swansea City in August 2017. Following his return to Bayern in 2018, he was signed by French Ligue 1 side Lille for a reported sum of €25 million in August 2019, making him Lille’s most expensive signing ever.

In his second season at the club, he helped the squad win the Ligue 1 title in 2020–21, ending a 10-year title drought. Sanches began his football training at guias da Musgueira when he was eight years old, and he joined Benfica’s youth system in 2006 when he was nine years old. He persuaded Benfica to take him after a 15-minute training session, but he had reservations about traveling to their academy in Seixal, on the other side of the Tagus river, every day.

Sanches made his professional debut with the B-team in the second division during the 2014–15 season. On October 5, 2014, he made his debut appearance in the competition, starting and playing the first half of a 2–2 away tie with Feirense. In the second half of the season, he was sent off twice with straight red cards: once as a substitute in a 3–2 home win over Porto B on 11 January 2015, and once as a starter in a 1–1 draw at Santa Clara on 7 March.

Sanches was promoted to the first squad in 2015–16 after a year with the reserve team, originally only for training sessions. He stayed in the reserves, and on August 30, 2015, he scored his first goal in a 2–1 loss at Varzim, scoring within the first two minutes. He scored two penalties kicks in a 3–2 loss to Desportivo das Aves seventeen days later. He scored in an away 11–1 group stage triumph over Galatasaray in the UEFA Youth League on October 21. Sanches made his first-team debut nine days later, replacing striker Jonas in the 74th minute of a 4–0 win over Tondela.

Sanches signed a new deal with Benfica until 2021 after the international break in November 2015, with a €45 million release clause. He earned his first start on November 25, when he played 90 minutes in a 2–2 away draw with Astana in the UEFA Champions League group stage.  Sanches started again the following Monday, this time in a Primeira Liga victory over Braga, and was praised by the media for his performance.  On 4 December, at the age of 18, he scored his first goal for Benfica, defeating Académica goalkeeper Trigueira with a 30-meter strike to complete a 3–0 league victory.  In doing so, he became Benfica’s youngest player to score a home goal at the Estádio da Luz in the twenty-first century.

On the 2nd of January, Sanches scored his second goal in the league’s only encounter against Vitória de Guimares. On April 24, he was racially abused by Rio Ave fans who made monkey noises as he walked off the ground after a 1–0 away victory. He smiled and moved his arms like a monkey in response to the provocation. Sanches was sent off in the first half of a 2–0 win at Maritimo on May 8, missing Benfica’s final league match, in which they retained their title at the expense of city rivals Sporting CP with a win over Nacional.

Sanches signed a five-year contract with German club Bayern Munich for €35 million, effective July 1, 2016, in a deal worth €80 million, with the additional €45 million subjects on goals. He became the most expensive Portuguese player to leave the domestic league and the first Portuguese player to join the Bavarian side as a result of this deal. After Javi Martnez, Mario Götze, and Arturo Vidal, the initial fee was the fourth-highest paid in Bayern Munich history. Manchester United had been following Sanches closely before he joined Bayern, and his former teammate Nani indicated they would regret not completing a trade for him.

Sanches made his debut on September 9th, replacing Arturo Vidal in a 2–0 win over Schalke 04 after recovering from a thigh injury. Despite making mistakes in his 71 minutes before being substituted by Joshua Kimmich, captain Phillip Lahm and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer reassured him, with the former remarking, “He’s a fantastic player; if he wasn’t, he wouldn’t be here. He’s a European champion, and he’ll be a valuable addition to our team in the future.” On October 24, he beat Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford to become the first Portuguese youngster to win the Golden Boy award for best European player under the age of 21.

While Bayern won the Bundesliga, Sanches only appeared in 25 games in all competitions and did not score or assist in any of them. He only started four league games and only played the complete one.  Sanches had to contend for playing time with more experienced players such as Arturo Vidal, Thiago, and Xabi Alonso. The fact that Bayern’s manager, Carlo Ancelotti, has a reputation for not relying on young players did not help Sanches.
