Pat Harrington Jr. ‘One Day at a Time’ cast members, Bonnie Franklin, Pat Harrington Jr. and Valerie Bertinelli are honored during the TV Land Awards, Saturday, April 14, 2012 in New York.

Character actor Pat Harrington Jr. is dead at the age of 86.

TMZ reports the “One Day at a Time” star, who played building superintendent Dwayne Schneider on the 1970s sitcom, died Wednesday surrounded by family. His daughter Tessa confirmed the news on Facebook, but did not disclose a cause of death.

“We were all with him today and tonight: crying, laughing and loving him. This is the single most heart wrenching and physically painful thing, I’ve ever had to endure,” she wrote.

On “One Day at a Time,” which ran from 1975 to 1984, Harrington played the handyman for co-stars Valerie Bertinelli, Bonnie Franklin and Mackenzie Phillips. He won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role.

“He always made me laugh,” Bertinelli wrote on Instagram.

His rep Phil Brock of the Studio Talent Group said in a statement: “We have all lost a gracious human being who will always be remembered for his portrayals of the human condition. Pat had the ability to bring laughter and kindness to any role. The twinkle in his Irish eyes let you know that you were in on the joke. His was an extraordinarily impactful long lasting career.”

Harrington’s career includes more than 150 film and TV credits, including appearances on “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” “The Munsters,” “The Lucy Show,” “The Partridge Family,” “The Love Boat” and “The New Scooby Doo Movies.” His most recent roles were in 2005 as Mac on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” in 2006 as Frank on “The King of Queens,” and in 2012 as Mr. Sherden on “Hot in Cleveland.”
