Nichelle Nichols, a star of Star Trek: The Original Series, died on July 30 at the age of 89. The late actress is most known for playing Lt. Nyota Uhura in the first six films based on the same continuity as well as the original TV series.

Since Lt. Uhura was one of the first powerful characters in live-action played by a black woman, the actress had actually blazed a road with the part. The character was also one of the first Black female characters in leading recurrent roles on US television, according to NASA.

She also returned to the role in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991).

After her final appearance in the sixth episode of the original series, Nichols consented to provide Uhura’s voice in a number of video games. She made her on-screen debut as Nana Dawson in the NBC series Heroes later that year. The latest movie starring the late actress to be released was 2021’s 12 to Midnight. She also worked on a film called Renegades: Ominara, which is shortly to be released.

As a result of her efforts on more than 67 different projects over the course of her career, Nichols was given the Life Career Award by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA for the part of Uhura. In addition, for her performance in 1966’s Star Trek, the actress received the 1999 Millennium Award from Golden Camera, Germany.
