Despite the fact that in back-to-back seasons under Saban at Alabama, Howard recorded the most receptions ever for a tight end in the program’s history, some people believed that he was underutilized in the Crimson Tide offense. After the 2016 season, Head Coach Nick Saban was asked about O.J. Howard’s involvement in the offense and responded by saying, “Quite honestly, O.J. should have been more involved all year long.”

During the 2017 Senior Bowl, Howard competed for the South team. He has mentioned that he likes to model his performance after Jason Witten, Jimmy Graham, and Jordan Reed.

He was able to improve his stock by having a substantial week of practice for the Senior Bowl, and a panel of scouts selected him the top practice player of the week for the Senior Bowl.

This allowed him to raise his value significantly. At the end of the game, Howard finished with four receptions for 39 receiving yards, which contributed to the South’s victory over the North by a score of 16–15. He participated in the NFL Combine and was successful in all of the positional and combine drills that were needed of him. During his pro day at Alabama, he decided to solely run positional drills for the scouts and representatives in attendance. Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Pro Football Focus, NFLDraftScout.com, as well as NFL analyst Mike Mayock and NFL analyst Bucky Brooks, all agreed that Howard was the best tight end available in this year’s draft.
