Ledisi was raised in Oakland, California. She started performing publicly at age eight with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra and later studied opera and piano at the University of California Berkeley.

In 2008, Ledisi released a Christmas album called It’s Christmas. In 2002, Ledisi also re-released her first album, Soulsinger, as Soulsinger: The Revival on Tommy Boy Records.

In 2008, Ledisi also performed the song “The Man I Love” as a blues singer in the movie Leatherheads. Ledisi first appeared on television in 2010 on BET’s Blackgirls Rock.

Ledisi has released eight studio albums, including Pieces of Me, which was released in 2011 and received three Grammy Award nominations. Ledisi has also written two books, Better Than Alright and Don’t Ever Lose Your Walk.
