Julian Brandt was born in Bremen and raised there. In his childhood, he played for SC Borgfeld and, subsequently, FC Oberneuland before joining the VfL Wolfsburg training system.

Bayer Leverkusen

Brandt signed a professional contract with Bayer Leverkusen in January 2014 for a cost of €350,000 during the January transfer window. On February 15, 2014, he made his professional debut in the Bundesliga against Schalke 04. He came on after 82 minutes in a 1–2 home loss to Son Heung-min. Three days later, he made his European Cup debut, coming on as a substitute in the first knockout round first leg against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League. He scored his first goal for Bayer Leverkusen on April 4, 2014, as he equalized in a 1–2 loss to Hamburger SV.

On August 26, 2017, at the age of 21 years, three months, and 25 days, during a 2–2 draw against Hoffenheim, Brandt became the youngest Leverkusen player to reach 100 Bundesliga appearances.

During the second part of the 2018–19 Bundesliga season, new club manager Peter Bosz repositioned Brandt, moving him from his usual wide position to a more central role in midfield alongside Kai Havertz. His goal output rose as a result of the position change, and in February 2019, he was nominated for the Player of the Month award after scoring twice and assisting on another four goals. He eventually won the trophy, making him the first player from Leverkusen to do so. His brace against Mainz 05 at the start of the month also marked his 200th appearance for the club in all competitions.

Dortmund wanted Brandt after the 23-year-old scored seven league goals and supplied eleven assists to help Leverkusen finish fourth in the Bundesliga and win a Champions League third qualifying round position for next season. On May 17, 2016, Brandt was named to Germany’s preliminary 27-man team for UEFA Euro 2016. He was a member of Germany’s squad at the 2016 Summer Olympics, where they earned a silver medal.
