John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892, in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He died on September 2, 1973, in Bournemouth, England.


Tolkien’s father was Arthur Reuel Tolkien (1857–1896), an English bank manager. His mother was Mabel, née Suffield (1870–1904).


Tolkien eventually married Edith Bratt on March 22, 1916.


Tolkien and Edith had four children: John Francis Reuel Tolkien (1917–2003), Michael Hilary Reuel Tolkien (1920–1984), Christopher John Reuel Tolkien (1924–2020), and Priscilla Mary Anne Reuel Tolkien (1929–2022).


Tolkien had one younger brother named Hilary Arthur Reuel Tolkien (1894–1976).


Tolkien was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University from 1925 to 1945 and of English studies there from 1945 to 1959. He was also a writer and scholar who achieved fame with his children’s book The Hobbit (1937) and his richly inventive epic fantasy The Lord of the Rings (1954–55).
