Beatrice Arthur was an American actress and comedian.

She was born Bernice Frankel on May 13, 1922, in New York City, United States.

Arthur was raised in a Jewish home with her sisters Gertrude and Marian.

She graduated from the Linden Hall School for Girls in Lititz, Pennsylvania, and subsequently studied at Blackstone College for Girls in Blackstone, Virginia for a year.

Beatrice Arthur served in the United States Marines from 1943 to 1945.

Following her discharge from the Marines, Arthur studied for a year at the Franklin School of Science and Arts in Philadelphia, where she became a licensed medical technician.

However, she switch careers and went to the School of Drama at The New School in New York to pursue acting.

Arthur began her acting career as a member of an off-Broadway theater group at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City in 1947.

She starred in several films and sitcoms including All in the Family (1971–72) and Maude (1972–78), The Golden Girls (1985–92), Lovers and Other Strangers (1970) and Mame (1974).

Arthur won the 1966 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for playing Vera Charles in Mame and Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1977 for Maude and 1988 for The Golden Girls.

Is Beatrice Arthur still alive?

Beatrice Arthur died of lung cancer at her home in Brentwood, Los Angeles on April 25, 2009, at the age of 86.

On April 28, 2009, the Broadway community paid tribute to her by dimming the marquees of New York City’s Broadway theater district in her memory for one minute at 8:00 p.m.

On September 16, 2009, a public tribute to Arthur was held at the Majestic Theatre in Manhattan.
