Five Dead After Suspected Herdsmen Attack Benue Communities (PHOTOS)

Five persons have been killed following fresh attack on four villages in Gwer-West Local Government area of Benue State by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

A pregnant woman and two others allegedly sustained serious injuries during the attack. The incident happened in the early hours of Friday, April 30.

The troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) were said to have trailed them to the Benue Nasarawa border and mounted an attack on them leaving the armed herdsmen to flee with gunshot wounds.

Reports suggests that Ahume Village along Makurdi/Naka Road was the first village to be attacked however, they met the full resistance of the troops who were based at the village to repel any attack from raiders.

Meanwhile, Tribune was told by one of the residents called Fidelis that the herdsmen moved to Tse-Nyarei village and begun shooting sporadically which left five people dead and leaving many others injured including a pregnant woman. This happened when the troops were patrolling Ahume community.

According to Fidelis, the remains of the five lost souls have been recovered by security operatives and evacuated to the morgue while the injures residents who were rescued alive with serious gunshot wounds have also been rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

He said;

“There was a distress call that herdsmen attacked Ahume village along Makurdi-Naka road. As troops stationed in Kula village were alerted, the bandits ran to another village Tse Nyarei where they killed three people.,” he said.

“Many others were injured. The soldiers followed and met the bandits at the river bank on the border between Benue and Nasarawa States where they exchanged fire with them. They however crossed the river and escaped into Nasarawa State.”
