“Driftmark” (Season 1 Episode 7) Of House of the Dragon: Recap & Review

Laena’s funeral opens House of the Dragon episode seven. Everyone expresses their sorrow over her passing, and Targareyn and Velaryon both join in. Aegon appears to be bored when Daemon interrupts the conversation with a manic giggle.

Rhaenyra speaks to her son after Laena’s coffin has been lowered into the water using ropes, reminding him of his location and the importance of House Velaryon. One of Daemon’s two kids extends a hand to Jace as they approach one another; it’s a sweet gesture. As for Daemon, he’s obviously insane and gives Rhaenyra several revealing stares.

As the evening goes on, Viserys goes to bed alone without Alicent, and Corlys chastises his son for being lost and crying in the middle of the ocean. After that, he talks with his side the history of Driftmark and who will inherit it. Corlys is reminded that “Rhaenyra’s offspring are not of your blood.” “History does not remember blood, it remembers names,” he responds.

Outside, as Rhaenyra strolls alongside Daemon along the shore, Corlys’ suspicions are all but verified. She acknowledges that she didn’t feel delight with Laena, but she did with Ser Harwin. Rhaenyra laments Daemon leaving her, and the two kiss as the waves softly lap up onto the shore. Rhaenyra whispers, “I want you.” The two then engage in sexual activity.

Aemond creates pandemonium on other parts of the beach. Vhagar, Laena’s orphaned dragon, is seen by himself. He approaches covertly and tries to ride it. He almost gets scorched when the creature spurns flames deep inside its guts and is completely dwarfed in the presence of this majestic creature.

Aemond, however, is able to tame the dragon and leads it on a lengthy tour around the castle. The amount of noise this makes awakens everyone in the castle, including Baela and Rhaena. Each of them approaches Jace in turn, and when he appears, they all go downstairs and start beating Aemond.

Given that one of Daemon’s children was supposed to be the one to claim the dragon, this explosive concoction detonates in a flurry of pandemonium. Luke has his nose shattered, while Aemond has his eye cut out. Lord Corlys also shows up as Viserys is ordering a collective hush in the hall.

The two women at its core, Alicent and Rhaenyra, frequently cross paths like mothers at a playground. The Kingdom’s future is at stake in this situation, which is different. Aemond is instructed to identify the source of these rumours regarding Rhaenyra’s bastard offspring. and after giving Alicent a thorough look, he mentions Aegon. “Everyone is aware. Simply observe them. Aegon answers.

Viserys has had it and orders everyone to put a halt to their fighting and make amends. “That is not enough.” As reparation for the harm done, Alicent decides that taking one of Rhaenyra’s children’s eyes would be a fair punishment.

Alicent instructs Criston Cole to take charge and carry out the King’s command when Viserys declines. She seizes a sword and charges the children as soon as he hesitates.

And now they see you as you are, Rahenyra snatches her old buddy and pulls her back. She slashes at Rhaenyra’s wrist, drenching the ground in blood, and snarls angrily about how unjust it is that Rhaenyra behaves as she pleases and doesn’t do as she is required to.

The tension finally subsides as Aegon asserts that a fair trade has been made. Even though he lost an eye, he now has a dragon. The issue has been resolved.

After all of this, Otto is back in his role as Hand of the King. After the event in the hallway, he approaches Alicent and declares his admiration for her. He continues by saying that they are playing an unpleasant game and that perhaps her reaction actually aided their cause. He assures her that Viserys will pardon her and that they will triumph together. Now that they have a dragon, Viserys will definitely pardon Alicent. Otto advises her daughter to exercise patience.

Regarding Rhaenyra, the Maester has repaired her and she is now speaking to Laenor. He acknowledges that he has let them down and blames the Gods for creating him in this manner. Rhaenyra grins and tells him that’s a rare occurrence, calling him a noble man with a nice heart.

Laenor makes the decision to step up his efforts, though, and continue to be her spouse. He knows that this is the best thing he can do for Rhaenyea and the kingdom when he sees the target painted on her back. Although thankful, Rhaenyra has another thought.

Rhaenyra approaches Daemon and recommends they properly fortify their relationship. As Aegon the Conqueror once did, she desires to bond their blood in order to claim Daemon as her spouse and Prince Consort. This would only be feasible if Laenor had passed away.

Ser Qarl is so murdered by Daemon at his expense. They discover their final son burning in the fire when the action shifts from their altercation to Lord Colys arriving in the hall. else do they?

A deft reveal reveals a still-alive, bald Laenor who Ser Qarl managed to whisk out of the premises. This strikes two birds with one stone and gives Laenor some closure because he has been daydreaming about the Stepstones and searching for a way out.

The closing scene of the episode shows Rhaenyra and Daemon getting married while their kids look on.

The Episode Review
The marriage of Daemon and Rhaenyra is sure to stun the entire realm. In addition to making Corlys want to retaliate, this will probably end the first season with a major war. There are many moving components in this situation, and Aemond’s theft of the dragon was the initial trigger.

It’s obvious that Alicent’s kids share her disposition, and at the end of the day Rhaenyra realises she needs to back up her claim if she wants to have any meaningful influence in the world.

Laenor actually being still alive and receiving what he’s always wanted—an escape—gives the ending a beautiful twist. He is no longer concerned about carrying on his family’s legacy or producing children, and this seeming agreement he has reached with Rhaenyra represents a turning point in the narrative.

The series finale next week should be a really dramatic event, and I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw a few more fatalities along the way.
