David Bowie dies after 18-month battle with cancer

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer David Bowie died Sunday following an 18-month battle with cancer. He had turned 69 on Jan. 8.

Inducted into the Rock Hall in 1996, he had a long and varied career as a singer and actor. He was slated to be honored at Carnegie Hall in March.

His death was announced on the official David Bowie Twitter and Facebook pages.

Bowie’s publicist confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fans first reacted as though it were a hoax in comments on the Facebook page, but quickly followed up with tributes on social media.

A statement on Bowie’s official website asked for privacy for his family.
