Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes (born September 8, 1994) is a Portuguese professional footballer who currently plays for Manchester United in the Premier League and for the Portugal national team. Fernandes is noted for his goal-scoring ability, playmaking ability, leadership, penalty-taking ability, and work ethic.

Fernandes, who was born in Maia, Porto, began his career in Italian Serie B with Novara before moving to Serie A with Udinese in 2013 and then Sampdoria three years later. In 2017, he signed with Sporting CP, where he was elected club captain, after five years in Italy. In 2018 and 2019, he won back-to-back Taças da Liga, as well as the Taça de Portugal, earning him spots in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year and Player of the Year in both seasons. He was the highest-scoring Portuguese midfielder and the highest-scoring midfielder in Europe in a single season in 2018–19, with 33 goals in all competitions.

The performances of Fernandes piqued the interest of numerous Premier League clubs, with Manchester United signing him for an initial sum of €55 million (£47 million) in January 2020, the second-highest fee paid by a Portuguese player leaving the local league at the time.

Fernandes was a member of Portugal’s youth national teams at the under-19, under-20, under-21, and under-23 levels. He competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics for Portugal. In 2017, he made his senior international debut, being nominated to Portugal’s squads for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals, and UEFA Euro 2020, winning the latter on home soil and earning a spot in the Team of the Tournament.

Born in Maia, Porto’s Metropolitan Area, Fernandes grew up supporting both Porto and Manchester United, idolizing his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes, Ronaldinho, Zinedine Zidane, and Stephen Ireland, whom he aspired to be like. Fernandes used to play street football with his older brother Ricardo, who was also a professional football player when he was younger. Fernandes’ father, who had gone to Switzerland, wanted him to join him, but he declined to owe to the low caliber of football in Switzerland.

Bruno Fernandes’ Career

Fernandes began his childhood career at Infesta, a local club. Fernandes was offered a youth contract with Porto’s academy as a child, but he chose to train with local rivals Boavista, who provided him with transportation because his parents were unable to drive him to Porto on a daily basis. Fernandes spent most of his youth football career with Boavista, beginning as a center defender until being converted to an offensive midfielder at the age of 15 after a loan to Pasteleira.

He moved to Novara, Italy, on August 27, 2012. Fernandes suffered at first in his new life in Italy, suffering from homesickness and having difficulty learning the language. After his partner relocated to Italy, Fernandes soon picked up the language and settled in, earning the nicknames “Maradona of Novara” and “Mini Rui Costa” in the process. Fernandes was promoted to the main squad in Serie B after only a few weeks with the youth teams, and he went on to participate in slightly more than half of the league games during the 2012–13 season, helping his team to fifth place and the promotion play-offs.

Inter Milan and Juventus were interested in signing Fernandes in the summer of 2013, but he chose to sign a co-ownership deal with Udinense, which promised him first-team opportunity. On November 3, he made his Serie A debut, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 0–3 home loss to Inter Milan. In a 3–3 tie with Napoli on December 7, 2013, Fernandes scored his first league goal. He scored again in the 1–1 tie in the second meeting between the two teams.

Fernandes joined Sampdoria on loan on August 16, 2016, with the option to sign a permanent contract. Twelve days later, he made his league debut, playing six minutes in a 2–1 home triumph over Atalanta. On September 26, 2016, in a 1–2 away loss to Cagliari, Fernandes scored his first goal for his new squad. During the season, he scored 5 goals in 33 Serie A games, guiding them to a tenth-place finish.

After returning from the UEFA European Under-21 Championship on June 27, 2017, Fernandes signed a five-year contract with Sporting CP for a reported sum of €8.5 million-plus bonuses.  Fernandes made his debut for the club in a 2–0 home win over Desportivo das Aves on August 6, 2017.  In his first five games in the Primeira Liga, he scored four goals, including a brace in a 5–0 away triumph over Vitória de Guimares.  On September 12, Fernandes made his first appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage, scoring 3–0 for the visitors in the 43rd minute of Olympiacos’ eventual 3–2 victory. He concluded his first season with 16 goals and 20 assists in all competitions, second only to Bas Dost, and was selected to the Primeira Liga Team of the Year and Player of the Year.

Following an attack by roughly 50 Sporting supporters at the club’s training field on 15 May 2018, Fernandes and several of his teammates, including coaches, were hurt. The squad finished third in the league and missed out on Champions League qualification. Despite the circumstances, the team consented to compete in the Taça de Portugal final the next weekend, losing to Desportivo das Aves. On July 6, Fernandes was selected the Player of the Year in the Primeira Liga. He signed a new five-year contract with a €100 million release clause four days later, reversing his intention to quit the Estádio José Alvalade following the departure of club president Bruno de Carvalho and receiving higher pay as a result.

In a 3–1 home win against Portimonense on March 3, 2019, Fernandes scored his 23rd competitive goal of the 2018–19 season, surpassing António Oliveira’s 1981–82 club record for goals by a midfielder in a season. He scored a hat-trick in an 8–1 away rout of Belenenses SAD on May 5, becoming the all-time leading goal scorer for a Portuguese midfielder in a single season, with 31 goals. [33] On May 25, 2019, he scored his 33rd and final goal of the season in Sporting’s Taça de Portugal final triumph over Porto. For the second year in a row, he was awarded Primeira Liga Player of the Year for his exploits in the 2018–19 season.

He scored seven goals in his first ten games of the 2019–20 season, including a six-game scoring streak. After Mário Jardel and Bas Dost, he became the third Sporting player in the twenty-first century to score in six or more straight appearances. On November 28, he scored twice and assisted on the other two goals in a 4–0 win over PSV Eindhoven, ensuring Sporting’s qualification to the UEFA Europa League knockout rounds.

Manchester United announced on January 29, 2020, that they had reached an agreement with Sporting for Fernandes’ move for a sum of up to €80 million (£67.6 million), subject to the player passing a medical and agreeing to personal terms. The deal was finalized the next day for an initial sum of roughly €55 million (£47 million), plus up to €25 million (£21 million) in add-ons and a 10% profit share if United ever sold Fernandes. Fernandes agreed to a five-and-a-half-year deal with the team.

Bruno Fernandes’ Wife

Back in 2015, Bruno Fernandes married Ana Pinho, his childhood sweetheart. They have two children together, a daughter and a son.
Ana has posted pictures of herself in the stands at Old Trafford cheering on Fernandes during his Manchester United games on social media on a regular basis.

Bruno Fernandes’ Net Worth

With United, Bruno Fernandes will earn a total salary of €9.36 million per year, with a weekly wage of €180,000. This is a bargain for United, who have a number of players earning more than the Portuguese midfielder.

If Fernandes continues to shine as a cornerstone for United, the 26-year-old may expect to be paid astronomically shortly. Currently, Fernandes’ net worth is only €9 million, but considering the trajectory of his career, this figure is certain to rise.
