Format
The show follows thirty singles from the same major city, fifteen men and fifteen women, all of whom are looking for romantic partners. The men and women date each other in purpose-built “pods” for a period of ten days during which time they are unable to see one other but can communicate with one another through the use of speakers. They begin with a setup similar to speed dating, but later on, they have the option of going on dates that are significantly longer. Whenever the daters feel ready, they are free to make a marriage proposal to one another. The first time a pair sees each other in person is after one of them has already accepted the other’s marriage proposal. After that, the engaged couples go to a resort for a retreat specifically for couples. They have the opportunity to be physically intimate for the first time during this trip, during which they also spend time getting to know their partners better. In addition to this, they get to know the other couples that are taking part in the experiment.

After the engaged couples’ retreat, they all decide to move in together into the same apartment complex in the city where they currently reside. During their time at the flats, they get to know the friends and relatives of their partners and gain additional insight into their partners’ life by discussing topics such as their partners’ money, recreational activities, personal habits, and final primary location. In addition to this, they organize weddings to be held at the end of the month. During this time of wedding planning, the group of women go shopping together for wedding dresses, while the group of men go shopping together for suits. They each bring a few friends and/or family members with them. They also decide things like the flavor and design of the cake that will be served during the reception. Each participant must determine for himself whether or not to say “I do” at the altar.

Production
Filming
Beginning on October 9, 2018, filming took conducted in Atlanta, Georgia, and continued there for the subsequent 38 days until the nuptials. On October 19, the couples had their first in-person encounters. Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Fayetteville was the location for the filming of the ten days spent in the pods. The newly engaged couples left the pods, and then the remaining couples went on a retreat to the Grand Velas Riviera Maya in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, where the filming took place. The couples whose relationships were strong enough to survive the retreat in Mexico move live together in a complex of apartments. Following the conclusion of the retreat, the engaged couples made their way back to Atlanta and checked into the Spectrum on Spring apartment building. It was there that they continued filming until the weddings took place. On November 15, the marriages were held at two different event facilities in Atlanta, which were called Flourish Atlanta and The Estate.

For the second season of the show, the pods were transported from Georgia to a brand new studio in Santa Clarita, California, where the production was taking place.

Unaired engagements
Within the group of participants, there were a total of eight couples that ended up getting engaged. In addition to the six couples who were shown getting engaged on the series, two other couples, Westley Baer and Lexie Skipper and Rory Newbrough and Danielle Drouin, also got engaged on the show. Newbrough shared the following statement with People: “As we were getting ready to leave for our vacation to Mexico, the leads of the show came in and said, ‘Hey, we were anticipating maybe one or two [engagements].’” In all of the other shows that we’ve put on, we’ve never had this kind of success. We planned for a group of five. Then, we received eight engagements, which meant that we needed to choose who we were going to follow. We were able to get our phones. They extended their gratitude to us and then apologized, saying that there simply wasn’t enough to go around for everyone.

After getting engaged in the pods, Baer and Skipper continued dating for a total of three months before calling off their engagement. After Newbrough and Drouin got engaged, they celebrated by going on a vacation together to Miami for a week. After returning from their vacation, they decided to end their relationship, and Drouin began seeing another contestant on the show, Matt Thomas, shortly thereafter. Later on, Thomas and Drouin went their separate ways as well.
