Awoniyi netted the decisive goal as Steve Cooper’s side defeated West Ham United at the City Ground on Sunday.

The Nigeria international made history as the first Forest player to score a Premier League goal since 1999.

“I’m really happy with the goal because it took me a long journey to get back to the Premier League,” Awoniyi told BBC Match of the Day 2.

“That’s why I’m very, very proud of myself, and of course I am grateful to God about it.”

The 25-year-old also spoke about the atmosphere around the City Ground.

The Reds lost their first game of the season against Newcastle United but the atmosphere around the ground played a key role in the win against the Hammers.

“The most important thing for me is just for the team to win,” he added.

“We must say a very big thank you to the fans, because from the beginning of the game till the end, they were all behind us and it’s what kept the team going to the last whistle.

“We just have to keep on going on. I believe at the end of the day we’ll have a great season.”
