In a single-vehicle rollover crash on the southbound 5 Freeway in Downey, a 17-year-old was killed and two others were seriously injured.

According to a California Highway Patrol press release, the crash occurred Saturday, March 5 2022,  at night north of the 605 Freeway when a 2010 Nissan Altima veered to the right, collided with a raised asphalt curb, struck a light pole, and then rolled over several times down a dirt embankment.

According to authorities, the two passengers in the car were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected. Jaylon Connish, a Carson resident and Warren High School student, was identified as one of the passengers. Connish was one of the three who were taken to St. Francis Medical Center, but he did not survive.

The conditions of the driver, Dajon Hancox, 17, and the other unidentified passenger were not disclosed. They were both Connish’s teammates.

Students and teammates gathered in front of a growing memorial on campus on Monday, March 7 morning, visibly upset by Connish’s death.

Warren High School football coach Kevin Pearson said Connish was one of the hardest working kids, not only on the field but also in the classroom.
