DeGrom played college baseball for the Stetson Hatters while attending Stetson University and before turning professional. In his baseball career, deGrom transitioned from shortstop to pitcher as a junior at Stetson.

He was selected by the Mets in the ninth round of the MLB draft in 2010 and made his MLB debut with the organization on May 15, 2014.
