2016 Comic Con highlights: 17 coolest trailers, news

The 2016 San Diego Comic Con revealed lots of exciting TV and movie news, including trailers for ‘Wonder Woman,’ ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ Marvel’s ‘Legion,’ and a surprise ‘Blair Witch’ sequel. Click through to see the top 17 highlights.

New ‘Star Trek’ TV series title revealed

William Shatner, Brent Spiner and other ‘Star Trek’ alumni celebrated the 50th anniversary of the franchise, which returns to the small screen next year in a CBS All-Access streaming TV series called ‘Star Trek Discovery.’ A teaser video reveals the adventures will take place on a ship called Discovery (NCC-1031), not the famed USS Enterprise.

‘Wonder Woman’ trailer

‘Batman v Superman’ star Gal Gadot returns as Wonder Woman in her own movie, also starring Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston and Ewen Bremner. ‘Wonder Woman,’ directed by Patty Jenkins, opens June 2, 2017.

Marvel’s new TV series ‘Legion’

FX revealed the first look at ‘Legion,’ a new ‘X-Men’-inspired Marvel TV series created by Noah Hawley (‘Fargo’) that follows a diagnosed schizophrenic who may have mutant super powers. Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza and Bill Irwin lead the cast. ‘Legion’ premieres in 2017.

‘The Walking Dead’ season 7 trailer

Who did Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) kill? We’ll find out when the AMC zombie series returns for more mayhem Oct. 23 at 9 p.m.

Brie Larson cast as Captain Marvel

It’s official: Oscar-winning ‘Room’ actress Brie Larson has been cast as Carol Danvers in Marvel’s first female superhero standalone film. ‘Captain Marvel’ will hit theaters March 8, 2019.

Goodbye, Tower of Terror

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ footage teased Baby Groot and more fun, but Marvel drew criticism over the weekend when it confirmed a new ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ ride (called Mission: BREAKOUT!) would replace the classic ‘Tower of Terror’ attraction at Disneyland in California. Expect it to open next summer.

‘Kong: Skull Island’ teaser trailer

Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Corey Hawkins, Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman star in the upcoming King Kong reboot, which will eventually lead to Godzilla vs. King Kong movie. ‘Kong: Skull Island’ opens March 10, 2017.

‘Justice League’ teaser

Batfleck leads DC’s upcoming superhero teamup movie, cracking jokes about Aquaman (‘I hear you can talk to fish’) and The Flash (‘So you’re fast’). Superman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg and Aquaman’s love interest Mera (Amber Heard) will also appear, along with Lois Lane (Amy Adams), Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) and others when ‘Justice League’ opens in Nov. 2017.

Surprise ‘Blair Witch’ sequel

Surprise! SDCC’s screening of ‘The Woods’ revealed the found footage horror movie was secretly titled ‘Blair Witch.’ The sequel to 1999’s ‘The Blair Witch Project’ follows James Allen McCune (“Shameless”) as the brother of Heather Donahue’s character from the original, trying to find out what happened. “Blair Witch” hits theaters Sept. 16.

Sia joins ‘My Little Pony’ movie

The ‘Chandelier’ singer will play a pony pop star named Songbird Serenade and contribute two original songs to the upcoming film, which also features Uzo Aduba, Emily Blunt, Kristen Chenoweth and SU alumnus Taye Diggs. ‘My Little Pony: The Movie’ hits theaters Oct. 6, 2017.

Ghost Rider joins ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

Five years after Nicolas Cage last played Johnny Blaze on the big screen, a newer, younger version of the antihero will join ABC’s ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Gabriel Luna (‘True Detective’) will play Robert ‘Robbie’ Reyes, who becomes a muscle car-driving Ghost Rider. Season 4 debuts this fall.

‘American Gods’ TV series

Neil Gaiman’s ‘American Gods’ is becoming a Starz TV series starring Ricky Whittle as Shadow, Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Crispin Glover as Mr. World and Kristin Chenoweth as Easter. Gods old and new meet when the show premieres in 2017.

Rihanna checks into ‘Bates Motel’

The ‘BBHMM’ singer, whose acting credits include ‘Battleship’ and the upcoming sci-fi film ‘Valerian’ (where she plays an alien stripper), will join A&E’s ‘Bates Motel’ as Marion Crane. Janet Leigh first played the iconic ‘Psycho’ character, screaming in the shower. ‘Bates Motel,’ starring SU alumna Vera Farmiga, returns for its final season next year.

‘Legends of the Hidden Temple’ movie

Olmec and original host Kirk Fogg in Nickelodeon’s upcoming movie adaptation of the ’90s game show. Three teens fight to survive a series of obstacles on a jungle trip when the TV film airs this fall.

‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ revival

Netflix confirmed it’s reviving ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ with Felicia Day, Patton Oswalt and appearances by original cast members Mary Jo Pehl, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy. Joel McHale and Dan Harmon will be among the writers when new episodes begin streaming in ‘the not too distant future.’

‘LEGO Batman Movie’ trailer

Will Arnett stood out in ‘The LEGO Movie’ as a ridiculous, over-the-top version of Batman, and now the superhero mini-fig is getting his own movie. The cast includes Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, Michael Cera as Robin, Zach Galifianakis as The Joker, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl and Mariah Carey as the mayor of Gotham City. ‘LEGO Batman’ hits theaters Feb. 10.

Marvel on Netflix: ‘Luke Cage,’ ‘Iron Fist,’ ‘The Defenders’

Marvel unveiled Netflix’s ‘Luke Cage’ trailer, a first look at ‘Iron Fist’ and a teaser for ‘The Defenders,’ which will bring both superheroes together with Jessica Jones and Daredevil. Another season of ‘Daredevil’ and a spinoff, ‘The Punisher,’ are also coming to the streaming service.
